Estimates by officials in one town say they will lose 750,000 gallons of water to theft and an untold amount of damages to the water system by the end of the year. 

Another town recently caught construction workers on 18 different occasions taking water from hydrants within a 3 week time frame.  An official stated it represents less than 10% of all water theft and that he is less concerned about the lost revenue than about the potential damage to the town’s water system.
